Your privacy
The short version: if you’re here to find cake, we don’t ask who you are. No sign-up, no account, no tracking cookies.
If you’re here to find cake
- We don’t ask for your name or email, and you don’t need an account.
- We count visits with GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly counter that doesn’t use cookies.
- We also keep simple, anonymous usage counts — which sheds get looked at, what people search for, which features get used — so we can make the site better. These are tied only to a scrambled code made from your internet (IP) address. We never store the address itself and can’t turn the code back into it.
- 👍 / 👎 votes and “Still there — I visited!” taps use the same scrambled code, so nobody can vote over and over. Your own device also remembers what you tapped, so the buttons look right next time.
- When you plan a journey, the places you type are passed to routing and address-lookup services to work out your route. We don’t save your journeys. We keep your IP address for 24 hours, purely to stop abuse.
Other companies involved
Your browser talks to these directly, so they can see your IP address. Each has its own privacy policy.
- OpenStreetMap — the map itself.
- Google — our fonts, the place search on the map page, and the “I’m not a robot” check on the contact form (which may set its own cookies).
Our server also asks OpenRouteService (routes), Ordnance Survey and postcodes.io (address lookups) on your behalf.
Cookies
We don’t set any cookies for visitors. (Google’s “I’m not a robot” check on the contact page may set its own.)
If you send us a message
The contact form emails your name, email address and message to us. It isn’t stored on the website. We keep the email for as long as it’s useful, then delete it.
If you’re a baker
- Public: your shed’s name, location, description, opening hours, dietary and payment details, social links and photos — whatever you choose to add.
- Private: your email address. It’s never shown on the site. We use it to send your personal My sheds link, to confirm submissions and claims, for a weekly “is your listing up to date for the weekend?” check-in, and for the occasional announcement about the site.
- We keep a simple record of your emails and choices: your email preferences, the weekend answers you give (open or closed), and when you open your My sheds page, including whether you got there from one of our emails. We count clicks on our own links only; our emails have no tracking pictures, so we can’t tell whether an email was read. Closing a shed from My sheds never deletes it.
- Every one of those emails has an unsubscribe link, and you can stop them whenever you like. Links you ask for yourself will still arrive.
- When you claim a shed or ask for a link, we keep your email, any name or message you give us, and your IP address with the request, to prevent abuse. Link requests are cleared after 7 days.
Who sees your data
Our website and email provider, Ionos. We never sell data or share lists with anyone.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it — including your shed listing — using our contact form. If you’re unhappy, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
